Our History

Casa d’Alem, named after its neighbouring Casa de Sant’Ana—also owned by our family—has belonged to the Dias Pinheiro family since at least the 19th century.
Its current appearance results from renovations carried out by the owner’s grandfather in the 1920s, when he prepared the house to live in after his marriage.

Influenced by the time he spent in England, he introduced advanced comforts for the region at that time, such as two bathrooms, hot running water and electric lighting. He also fully redecorated the house, and the furniture he acquired remains in place to this day.
In the late 1980s, the current owner renovated the house to add a private bathroom to each room and modernised the technical facilities, while preserving its original essence.
In 1991, Casa d’Alem ceased to be exclusively for family use and began welcoming guests as a Rural Tourism House.

Since opening to the public—now operating as a Country House—the property has undergone minor adaptations to enhance comfort while always respecting the original period of its restoration.

Our Vision

The owners’ vision when creating a rural tourism house was to offer a comfortable and peaceful environment where guests could enjoy the very best of the Douro Valley in a house deeply marked by regional history. Casa d’Alem is part of a vineyard and features a swimming pool overlooking the surrounding landscape and the Marão mountain range.

The goal has always been to provide a pleasant stay in a house with rustic 19th-century décor, offering high-quality service and paying special attention to small details that make guests feel at home. Guests can enjoy the garden, outdoor terrace seating, games room and outdoor pool. Homemade Portuguese meals are also available and can be shared with other guests or enjoyed privately.

Pets are allowed on the property and must be accompanied by their owners in common areas. Access is restricted only in the dining room.

Leisure Areas &
Outdoor Spaces

Guests at Casa d’Alem can enjoy the terrace and covered outdoor areas around the house, furnished with tables and seating, the entire garden, and even stroll freely through the property, admiring the vegetable garden and vineyards. The house’s highlight is its outdoor swimming pool with views over the Douro Valley and the Marão mountains

For more active guests, a padel court is available, offering the chance to play while enjoying magnificent vineyard views.

Têm ainda à sua disposição uma sala de estar com uma mesa de jogos, vários jogos de tabuleiro e uma televisão com vários canais
